Character Education

A strong adherence to a character focus helps to guide decision-making at PCS. Whether it is academic instructional practices, classroom and school culture, or social-emotional supports, our commitment to an ethical foundation of research-based character practices guides our thinking. Our philosophical approach to character education is unique because we have never prescribed to one specific program.  It is through a combination of character education practices that we support and develop our core ethical values: Caring, Respect, and Responsibility. In true character education practice, we partner with our students, peers, families and the greater community to help guide students to understand the incredibly positive impact strong ethics can have in every area of their lives.

We work hard to hold each other accountable and we celebrate helping students be their best selves at PCS and beyond.

Continuing Our Character Journey

As the first charter school in the St. Louis area designated as both a State and National School of Character, character education is at the heart of all we do.  After first receiving recognition as a State School of Character CharacterPlus, we were then named a National School of Character in 2011 by Character.org, located in Washington, D.C.

This recognition supported our strong character foundation but, more importantly, served to encourage us to grow more deeply as we targeted other areas supportive of our character mission.

Character.org defines National Schools of Character as schools and districts that have demonstrated through a rigorous evaluation process that character development has made a positive impact on academics, student behavior, and school climate.  As a National School of Character, PCS is regarded as a model for other schools to follow in the area of character education.  PCS continues to be a model and leader in the area of character education, often hosting local, national, and international delegates of educators who visit and meet with students, teachers, and school leaders in order to learn more about our journey.

PCS is committed more than ever to continuing the vital work of character education for our students and each other. Our goal has always been to help grow not just great students, but great people. We believe that through strong character education practices, our students will be empowered to become the change agents that will have a lasting, positive impact on their families, communities, and the world!
